In this painting, circa 1832, we see merchant vessels of several nations, small ship’s boats, and trading barges along with visiting vessels of a British Squadron. The massive granite and quartz rock of Cape Diamond rises Original Art5 feet above the St. Lawrence River and supports the growing upper and lower city with it battlements, fortifications and signal station. The Plains of Abraham lie on the far side. Spires of the great Churches and Cathedrals point up into a gather storm.
