John’s patron was enthused by Samuel Bawlf’s book about a suggested visit to British Columbia waters by Sir Francis Drake in 1579 . He requested John paint an image showing the possible interaction of the Golden Hinde with the local first nations peoples in the Comox area. Painting the ship was not a problem as there are many drawings and plans of the ship. However, research about the local natives and their canoes was very difficult as there are no written records of this time. I spoke to our native carver friend in whose territory the event took place, and he also did research for us to determine the style of the canoes and dwellings. We seem to have satisfied him and his elders.
